Relationships begin with a mindful you

Mindful relationships for a better future

“Pay attention right now to what bothers you the most about yourself in your relationships to others and trust that simply by paying attention, little by little you will see what you need to do.” Norman Fischer

Building relationships that last is not an easy task, but that does not mean it is ‘mission impossible’.

Seeing our present venture will shapeshift in time requires that we put in the attention it deserves.

Just like upkeeping a garden, if we want to see it flourish, we need to cultivate the ground regularly.

Yes, the weather may turn, but with the right motivation, effort, and enough attention, it will grow.

Remember this is not a onetime thing, a relationship just like a plot of garden needs groundkeepers.

The basics

Understanding our relationships are ours to cultivate is the first step in the right direction, take charge.

Knowing our efforts may not always lead to the anticipated results will help us keep a healthy outlook.

Motivated by a genuine wish to create something that will have a future guides our present attempts.

Realizing the energy, we invest may take time to show its fruit asks that we be patient and forbearing.

Deaf and blind | Ignorance of ignorance

Not ignorance, but ignorance of ignorance is the death of knowledge. Alfred North Whitehead

Ignorance of ignorance is said to be the cause of our perpetual suffering, but what is ‘that’ which we don’t know?

The doors to the world open through our senses but it is our mind that makes the puzzle whole.

You may think that is good enough but what you encounter, turns out, is not what it appears to be, why?

Not only does our mind fails to interprets stimuli AS IS, it distorts and taints what it receives.

Mindful that escape won’t help

Be mindful that you are in the universe and the universe is in you: if the universe is, you are; if you are, the universe is.” Thich Nhat Hanh, Vo-Dihn Mai, Mobi Ho

The world as we know it is changing at a startling pace, but are we mindful of its effects on us?

Surely, local, and global events impact our mindset and actions, and there is no way to avoid it.

When the reality around seems bleak and appears to spiral down out of control, we feel helpless.

To shield ourselves from this ‘undesirable’ present, we will look for ways to forget what’s happening.

Faith | The energy that drives our journey

“Whenever anyone with faith visualizes me, I am there.” Buddha

Faith, ‘placing your heart upon a way’, is a beneficial mental factor cited by the Buddha.

This is no blind faith, it is one that derives from experience and understanding, true insight.

Why is it important? Because deep belief brings about true conviction, that’s crucial when we endeavor transformation.

Regardless of the way we opt to take, first we must make sure that it is sound, don’t follow foolishly.

Right Concentration | Master your mind

Right Concentration | More than just a skill

“Meditation is right concentration.” Thomas Cleary

Right concentration is listed last in the Buddha’s eightfold path of liberation, but it is of prime importance.

Justly so, failure to keep our mind from wandering off has us often make stupid mistakes.

Simply because we’re physically present doesn’t mean our attention is where it should be, right here.

The ability to concentrate is not just about maintaining our focus long enough, it goes much deeper.

Right speech | more than just words

Right speech | more than just words

Right speech | watch your mouth

“The Buddha divides right speech into four components: abstaining from false speech, abstaining from slanderous speech, abstaining from harsh speech, and abstaining from idle chatter.” Bhikkhu Bodhi

The practice of right speech is listed 3rd in the eightfold paths of liberation, Buddha’s middle way.

Following right view and right thought, the practice asks that we do not use words lightly.

What does that mean? We try to be truthful yet never hurtful, we don’t boast nor mislead, we refrain from gossip.

How do we do that? We stay connected, because for our filters to work our attention is needed.

The principle of right action

The principle of right action

Right action | Spread you wings

Abstaining from the destruction of life, abstaining from taking what is not given, and abstaining from sexual misconduct — this is called right action. Bhante Henepola Gunaratana, Bhikkhu Bodhi

Is this the right action? It’s not something we always think about, we often act without thinking and regret it later.

The fact is we are not thinking through our choices, we rarely take into account how it will affect us long-term.

We may know right from wrong, but we handle things the worse way, mostly out of deeply rooted habits.

Not only that, we don’t seem to learn from past mistakes and go on repeating our steps blindly.

Lust | Our mind with a blindfold

“Lust is a maker of measurement, hate is a maker of measurement, delusion is a maker of measurement.” Buddha

The feeling of lust is defined as an intense desire, one that often sends us seeking for sensual gratification.

What’s the problem with that? sadly, the uncontrollable urge comes at the cost of our true happiness.

Our appetite for pleasure grows the more we indulge it, when it doesn’t know moderation, it becomes dangerous.

Why is it bad for us to let lust take the wheel? First because this driver does not think.

Whether you were born with a handicap, suffered an injury or illness, you have no choice but live with it.

Dissatisfaction | Living in frustration is not living

Dissatisfaction | Living in frustration is not living

Dissatisfaction | A fact of life

“As long as the ocean of dissatisfaction remains within you, the slightest change in the environment can be enough to bring out a problem.” Lama Thubten Yeshe, Nicholas Ribush

Dissatisfaction is defined as a state of being unsatisfied, and like all states of mind it stands on a continuum.

Just as we are more or less happy, the same goes with dissatisfaction, our mood isn’t something fixed.

If we could choose our mindset, we would rather stick with the happy ones, unfortunately we can’t.

However, what we can count on is to experience discontent, like a dark cloud that comes and goes.
